Mount Edgecumbe: Exploring a Reawakened Volcano, by Claire Puleio - Science for Alaska
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 місяці тому
Although Mount Edgecumbe hasn’t erupted in 4,000 years, in 2018 its ground surface began inflating and increased seismicity was detected in the area. What’s happening with this long-dormant Alaskan volcano? UAF PhD student Claire Puleio describes her research on the volcano and her attempts to uncover the mystery of Mount Edgecumbe’s current activity. Claire Puleio presented the talk “Mount Edg...

There are volcanoes all the way along the west of Canada. So yes volcanoes do exist between Edgecumbe and the Cascades. The Cascades come into southern British Columbia with centres like such as Mount Meager and Silverthrone Caldera. Just as the Mendocino Triple Junction defines the southern end of the Cascades there is a corresponding northern triple junction where seismic activity along the coast switches back to mainly strike-slip motion. That big strike slip plate boundary fault is called the Queen Charlotte Fault (QCF). In Alaska it's also called the Fairweather Fault. It's generally a transpressional regime rather than transtensional. The boundary between Queen Charlotte and Fairweather is the triple junction where the Yakutat Terrane starts offshore. Thrust component motion is greater towards the southern end of the QCF. The main volcanic features along this part of Canada are the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province. This is the "other side of the mountains" activity referred to in the talk. The magma source is decompression melting due to continental rifting. Similar to the Basin and Range in many ways. Probably the most famous eruptive centre is Tseax Cone which produced a large effusive eruption around 1690 estimated to have killed several thousand local inhabitants. Another more well known centre is Mount Edziza. The extent of the province is mainly defined by the Denali Fault and the Tintina Fault. In between that province and the Cascades are a few volcanic areas such as the Anaheim Volcanic Belt which is probably due to hotspot activity.

Beavers are still recovering from being over trapped in the 1700s. They are moving into areas that they would have moved into at the end of the little ice age, if they had not been so over trapped to produce top hats.
